Car Rental in Shimla

Shimla is about 350 km from Delhi, seven to eight hours by road: NH44 across Haryana to Chandigarh, then the hill highway through Kalka, Parwanoo and Solan, climbing from the plains to the ridge at about 2,200 metres. Our Delhi office runs the route as a two or three-night trip, and many guests ride the Kalka to Shimla toy train for one direction while the car carries the luggage up.

Once in town a car rental in Shimla is more valuable than in almost any other hill station, because the Mall, the Ridge and Lakkar Bazaar are sealed to traffic and parking is scarce. The driver drops at the lift or the Victory Tunnel and the town is walked; the car then does the day trips that make the stay, to Kufri, Naldehra, Narkanda for the Hatu Peak road and Chail through the deodar forest.

For a couple a Dzire or Etios is fine on this road; a family of five or six with warm clothing and shopping from the Mall should book an Innova Crysta, and larger parties travel in a Tempo Traveller. Winter mornings above Kufri and on the Narkanda road can need chains, which the driver carries from December to February, and the hill sections are driven by day.

Why the Shimla car comes from our Delhi fleet

  • check Cars inspected before each hill run, with chains in the boot in winter and tyres suited to the wet Solan stretch.
  • check Drivers with verified licences who have driven the Kalka to Shimla highway through fog, rain and the June rush, and know where the Cart Road backs up.
  • check Rates run per kilometre against the daily allowance on the card, plus the driver's charge per day; tolls on NH44 and parking at Shimla's lots are billed as incurred.
  • check Hotel pickups outside the sealed core arranged so the vehicle stays at your door rather than at a distant stand.
  • check 24x7 phone support from Delhi for changes, extra day trips or an onward leg to Manali via Mandi.

A booking needs the dates, the group size and which hotel or area you are staying in; we then confirm the car, the driver and the quote for the round trip and the local days.

Good to know: car rental in Shimla

  • Delhi to Shimla is about 350 km and takes 7 to 8 hours; Chandigarh is the halfway point for a meal stop.
  • April to June and September to November are the reliable months; December to February brings snow and chain days on the higher roads.
  • The Mall, the Ridge and Lakkar Bazaar are closed to cars; drivers drop at the lift or the tunnel parking and the centre is walked.
  • Kufri, Naldehra and Narkanda are 16 to 60 km out and are done as day trips with the same car.
  • Included: chauffeur-driven AC car, driver's charges, tolls and parking as on the rate card. Not included: toy train tickets, entry fees, meals and hotels.
  • Suits couples and families from Delhi who want one car for the drive, the day trips and the return, with the option to add Manali.

The toy train earns one leg of the journey: board at Kalka and ride the ninety-six kilometre, hundred-tunnel UNESCO line up while the car repositions to meet you at Barog or Shimla - a five-hour crawl children remember longer than any highway. Barog's station, deep in pine forest, remains the classic breakfast halt.

History fills wet afternoons here: the Viceregal Lodge hosted the conferences that led to Partition and now tours as the Indian Institute of Advanced Study; the Gaiety's Victorian theatre still stages plays; and the state museum's miniature-painting rooms reward an unhurried hour. Jakhoo's monkeys, fair warning, snatch spectacles - the temple sells securing cords for a reason.

Shimla's parking geometry means hotels outside the sealed core often serve car travellers better: Sanjauli, Chhota Shimla and the Kufri road all put the vehicle at your door. June and October bring the cleanest light, moderate crowds and the Narkanda apple country at its most photogenic.

Colonial Shimla survives in fragments worth collecting: Bantony Castle's restored timberwork, the cast-iron frame of the old Railway Board building, Gorton Castle, and the Ridge library's reading room - all walkable between lift drops while the car holds below with the coats and the shopping.

Snow chasing works in tiers: town dustings melt by noon, Kufri holds through the January crowds, Narkanda keeps serious cover with far fewer people, and the slopes beyond Rohru reward the committed. Winter cars carry chains as standard; when to fit them is the driver's call, not the schedule's.

Seasonal advisories are fixtures here: peak June demands early hotel check-ins, the pedestrian core extends its hours in high season, and the bypass saves an hour when the Cart Road crawls. These micro-decisions are the driver's daily craft.

For the return, many guests drop via Chail - the palace hotel and the famously high cricket ground - rejoining the highway at Kandaghat, trading forty minutes for deodar forest the whole way.
