The road to Kashmir is an expedition in itself: Delhi to Jammu runs roughly 580 km up NH44, and the onward Jammu-Srinagar highway - about 250 km through the Chenani-Nashri tunnel, India's longest road tunnel - threads the mountains into the valley. A hired car with a local driver matters more here than almost anywhere, because convoy timings, weather closures and single-lane stretches are daily realities the driver absorbs so you do not have to.
The valley's headline experiences are well earned: a shikara ride and a houseboat night on Dal Lake, the Gulmarg gondola rising toward Apharwat's snowfields, pony trails up the Lidder valley at Pahalgam, and the Thajiwas glacier walk at Sonamarg. In winter Gulmarg turns into India's principal ski resort, and car rental in Jammu Kashmir switches to snow-ready vehicles on the approach roads.
From Jammu itself the dominant journey is Katra, 50 km away and the base town for the Vaishno Devi climb, with the Raghunath temple complex and Bahu Fort filling the day around it. Our cars handle airport pickups at both Jammu and Srinagar and stay with the party for the entire circuit.
A classic ten-day plan links Jammu, Katra, Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg in one loop, with Patnitop as a quiet hill stop on the way up. Book the vehicle for the whole route rather than city-by-city - re-hiring locally in season is expensive and uncertain.
Highway realities worth knowing: the Jammu-Srinagar road observes maintenance and convoy schedules, sections one-way the traffic through the Ramban gorge works, and fresh snow can hold vehicles at Qazigund - always keep a buffer day against a flight out of Srinagar. The Mughal Road over Pir ki Gali offers a spectacular fair-weather alternative into the valley via Rajouri.
Season by season: April opens Asia's largest tulip garden below the Zabarwan ridge; June to August is houseboat and trekking prime; late October turns the chinar trees copper, when the Mughal gardens photograph best; and December to February belongs to Gulmarg's skiers, with the gondola's upper phase reaching nearly four thousand metres of powder.
Saffron fields at Pampore, the cricket-bat workshops lining the Bijbehara road, and the sacred spring of Kheer Bhawani at Tulmulla add texture between the marquee stops - each an easy pull-over for a car, none feasible on a bus tour.
Jammu city deserves more than a transit night: the gilded halls of the Raghunath complex, Mubarak Mandi's restored Dogra palaces, Amar Mahal's red-brick museum above the bend of the Tawi, and the cave shrine of Peer Kho. Patnitop's meadows break the highway climb two hours north.
For Vaishno Devi the car's job is precision: a drop at Katra's Banganga entry with yatra slips arranged, holding through the long climb and darshan - helicopter and battery-car options shorten it - and receiving the party back for a rest day before the road moves on. Tradition completes the pilgrimage at Bhairavnath's shrine above the bhawan.
Rail now reaches the valley: the Chenab bridge - the world's highest railway arch - and the new train link toward Srinagar have added a spectacular arrival option, and a growing number of guests ride the rails one way and drive the other to see both faces of the mountains.

Kashmir journeys begin in Delhi for most guests: pickup at IGI Airport or a hotel, a night in the capital, then the long NH44 run to Jammu. Those who want Delhi's sights first give it a day on the same car before heading north.
Uttar Pradesh sits in the opposite direction from Kashmir, so the two join through Delhi: Agra's Taj and Mathura's temples on the Yamuna Expressway leg, then back to the capital and north on NH44 to Jammu. One booking, one coordinator.
Overseas visitors frequently pair the Golden Triangle with Kashmir: Delhi, Agra and Jaipur by car in five days, a flight to Srinagar, then our Kashmir vehicle for the lake, the gardens and Gulmarg. The Delhi car drops you at the airport and the Srinagar car meets the flight.
Kashmir's snow and Rajasthan's desert are a two-season pairing: the valley in May or June, Jaipur and Jaisalmer from November. On one long trip the connection runs through Delhi, with a car at each end and a flight or the NH44 drive between.
Vaishno Devi and Haridwar share a pilgrimage calendar, and the road between Katra and the Ganga - via Jammu, Pathankot and Chandigarh, roughly 600 km - is a two-day drive that families book as one journey. Rishikesh and the Char Dham follow in season.
Dalhousie, Khajjiar and Dharamshala are a day from Jammu through Pathankot, so a Kashmir trip can end in Himachal's gentler hills instead of the plains. The same hill-rated driver carries you from Patnitop to the Kangra valley.
Amritsar is about 230 km south of Jammu via Pathankot, four to five hours, and the Golden Temple is the natural halt on the road back to Delhi. Vaishno Devi in the morning, Wagah's ceremony at dusk the next day, and NH44 home.
Jammu and Kashmir is two journeys in one: the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage from Katra, and the valley circuit of Srinagar's Dal Lake, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg. The highway between them, with its convoy timings and Banihal weather, is where a local driver earns his fare.
Kashmir is the northern limit of a North India road trip, and the run from Delhi - NH44 through Punjab to Jammu, the tunnel road to Srinagar - is the longest single leg we plan. Most circuits fly one way to keep the rest of the tour intact.
