Kedarnath is the one Char Dham shrine that no car can reach. Our vehicles run from Delhi to Sonprayag, about 450 km by way of Haridwar, Rishikesh, Devprayag and Rudraprayag, which is a full day on the road with the last third on hill bends above the Mandakini. From Sonprayag a local shuttle covers the short stretch to Gaurikund, and the 16 km climb to the temple at about 3,580 metres is done on foot, by pony or by palanquin. Guests who prefer to skip the trek book a helicopter from Phata, Sersi or Guptkashi, and the car waits at the helipad.
The shrine opens in late April or May and closes after Diwali, so the working season for a Kedarnath car rental is May to October or early November, with the monsoon weeks in between when landslides make the hill drive slow. For a couple or three pilgrims a Dzire or Etios sedan is enough; a family of five or six with luggage should take an Innova Crysta, and larger parties travelling together fit better in one of our Tempo Travellers. On the hill sections the driver keeps to daylight hours, which is a rule rather than a preference.
Helicopter seats from Phata, Sersi and Guptkashi are sold by the operators through the official booking portal and go quickly for May; tell us your slot and the driver builds the drive around it. Otherwise the car and driver stay at Sonprayag or Guptkashi for the one or two nights the trek takes, at the driver charge shown on the rate card.
Booking needs your dates, the number of travellers and whether you want the trek or the helicopter; we confirm the vehicle and driver by phone or WhatsApp and share the driver's details the evening before departure.
The trek deserves respect: the sixteen kilometres from Gaurikund climb about fifteen hundred vertical metres past Jungle Chatti, Bheembali and Lincholi, with ponies, palanquins and porters bookable at the trailhead and oxygen posts along the way. Start before dawn, walk steadily, and the temple arrives by early afternoon; many pilgrims sleep at Kedarnath for the dawn aarti before descending.
While the car waits below, side visits fill the recovery days: Triyuginarayan, where tradition holds that Shiva and Parvati married before a flame that still burns; Kalimath's shakti peeth; and Chopta's meadows with the Tungnath trail for legs that still answer. Ukhimath, the deity's winter seat, is where each season's palanquin processions begin and end.
Pack for four seasons in one day - the Mandakini valley swings from sun to hail without notice - and complete the biometric yatra registration at Haridwar, Rishikesh or Sonprayag before heading up; our drivers fold the paperwork stop into the drive so it costs no extra day.
Guptkashi makes the best base for mixed groups: the trekkers leave before dawn while the rest visit its Vishwanath and Ardhanarishwar temples or the Kalimath valley, and watch the Chaukhamba wall change colour through the day - one car serving both halves of the party.
Photography on this route peaks at unexpected points: the Devprayag confluence from the terrace above the bazaar, Augustmuni's riverside evening light, and the first full sight of the temple against the Kedar dome as the trail crests Lincholi. Keep slack in the schedule for them - these mountains rarely repeat an offer.
Connectivity notes for the valley: the last dependable fuel and ATM stops are at Guptkashi, phone signal holds at Sonprayag but not on the trail, and the temple settlement runs on solar and generators with early lights-out. Treat the trek day as offline and the planning gets easier.
