Add Mindrolling Monastery in Clement Town, with one of the world's tallest stupas, for an afternoon nobody expects from Dehradun.

Rail travellers, note: the Shatabdi and the Nanda Devi Express both terminate in the city centre, and our station pickups continue straight to Mussoorie - a ninety-minute climb that beats hunting hill taxis on arrival. In the monsoon the Mussoorie road occasionally holds for slips, so drivers check status before committing to the bend-heavy lower route.

Doon eats well and cheaply: sticky buns and rusk from the Rajpur Road bakeries, momos and thukpa near the Tibetan market by Parade Ground, and Garhwali thalis in plain-sight places off Chakrata Road that only locals seem to enter. Ask the driver - recommending them is half his job.

Doon's education heritage explains its polish: the great school campuses, the Indian Military Academy whose passing-out parades close roads twice a year, and cantonment tree tunnels that make even errands scenic. March and October give the valley its clearest mountain views.
