Jaipur lies about 270 km south-west of Delhi on NH48 - close to five hours of driving, which makes it an easy overnight stay or a very long day trip. Book ahead for the winter high season, when Jaipur fills with weddings and the literature festival. Fort entry fees and licensed guides - issued by the Rajasthan Tourism Board - are payable directly; the car fare itself is all-inclusive, and the driver waits through every visit. Ajmer and Pushkar, about 140 km on, make a natural second day.
Give Amber the morning it deserves: the fort opens early, the climb by jeep or on foot up the ramp beats the heat, and the Sheesh Mahal's mirror-work catches low sun best before ten. Panna Meena ka Kund's photogenic stepwell hides five minutes from the fort gate, and the Anokhi block-printing museum in an Amber haveli rounds out the area before the tour buses arrive.
Jaipur's evening problem - everything good happens at once - resolves with a car: sunset from Nahargarh's ramparts, dinner across town, and a late show at Raj Mandir, the meringue-shaped cinema where the audience is half the entertainment. Galtaji's monkey temple in its ravine east of the city suits the following dawn.
Craft shopping by car beats walking the bazaars for serious buyers: blue-pottery workshops on Amer Road, block-printing units at Sanganer near the airport, and carpet looms that ship worldwide - the driver waits, the haggling stays yours. December to February evenings run genuinely cold, so carry a layer for the fort winds.
Jaipur's food circuit is compact and car-friendly: pyaaz kachori early at Rawat, dal-baati at lunch, lassi in clay kulhads on MI Road, and laal maas where the driver recommends rather than where the signboard shouts loudest. Masala Chowk in Ram Niwas garden covers the family's street-food spread in one stop.
Beyond the pink walls, Abhaneri's Chand Baori - among India's deepest stepwells - sits ninety minutes toward Agra and pairs with the Bhangarh ruins for a legends-heavy day trip, while Samode's painted palace fills a gentler half day to the north.
Jaipur's airport puts Rajasthan one hop from every metro, and the smart short-trip pattern is fly-in, drive-out: land by nine, Amber by eleven, and the evening flight home after Nahargarh's sunset - a full Pink City day with no hotel at all. The waiting car is what makes the arithmetic work.

Jaipur bookings usually begin at IGI Airport or a Delhi hotel, and the NH48 run south-west takes about five hours with a Neemrana halt. Guests who want the capital first spend a day on Humayun's Tomb, Qutub Minar and the walled city, then take the same driver to the Pink City.
Agra is 240 km east of Jaipur through Fatehpur Sikri and Bharatpur, the third side of the Golden Triangle. Beyond it, Mathura and Vrindavan lie on the road back to Delhi, and the Agra-Lucknow Expressway carries the same car to Lucknow and Ayodhya.
Jaipur is the Triangle's western corner, and starting here has its logic: fly in, see Amber and the City Palace, drive to Agra via Fatehpur Sikri, and finish in Delhi where the flights home are. Our drivers run this loop every week.
From Jaipur the state opens in every direction: Pushkar and Ajmer in three hours, Ranthambore's tigers in four, Jodhpur in six, and Udaipur or Jaisalmer on a longer day. A ten-day loop on one car is the classic way to see it, and winter is the season.
Jaipur to Haridwar is a long plains day of about 500 km via Delhi and Meerut, which pilgrim families usually break with a Delhi night. The Ganga aarti, Rishikesh and Mussoorie follow, and the Char Dham in season on the same booking.
Rajasthan's forts and Himachal's hills join on one long booking through Delhi and Chandigarh: Jaipur to Shimla is about 630 km, a two-day drive with a Delhi halt, and Manali or Dharamshala follow with a hill-rated driver.
Jaipur to Amritsar is roughly 700 km via Delhi and NH44, best split with a Delhi or Chandigarh night. Families seeing the Pink City and the Golden Temple on one trip often drive one way and take the Shatabdi or a flight back.
Kashmir is far from Jaipur by road - Jammu is over 800 km - so most guests fly from Jaipur to Srinagar or Jammu and pick up our local car there for Vaishno Devi, Dal Lake and Gulmarg. The Rajasthan car drops you at the airport.
