Wear closed shoes, long trousers and a windproof layer, tie back long hair, and hand loose items to the driver before take-off.

Route notes for paragliding at Solang Valley and Marhi

• Solang Valley is about 13 km and 40 minutes from Manali; Marhi is about 35 km up the Rohtang road and is reachable only in the months the pass is open.
• Meals at Solang are from the dhabas beside the car park; the driver waits there while you fly.
• A trip to Marhi requires the Rohtang permit, issued online with a daily vehicle cap; Solang needs no permit and has a paid car park.

Tandem Paragliding: This is the standard option at Solang and needs no experience. You are clipped into a harness in front of a licensed pilot, run a few steps down the slope and are airborne within seconds. Short, medium and high flights differ only in take-off height and time aloft. Children can fly if they meet the weight range and an adult signs for them.

Solo Paragliding: Pilots with their own rating and equipment can fly solo at Solang and Marhi with the permission of the local association, which checks certification and asks for a flight plan on busy days. Thermals are strongest from late morning and the valley wind picks up in the afternoon, so most solo flying happens before noon.

Paragliding Courses: A few schools at Solang and in Manali run short beginner courses, typically four to seven days, covering ground handling on the lower slope, first solo hops and, weather permitting, a supervised higher flight. Courses are scheduled outside the peak tourist weeks so that the slope is less crowded.
