Shimla Solan valley tour Overview

  • DURATION 03 Nights 04 Days
  • TYPE OF TRIP ROAD TRIP
  • START CITY Delhi
  • DESTINATION CITY Shimla - Kufri - Solan Valley

The Shimla Solan Valley Kufri tour is a 3 nights and 4 days road trip from Delhi with all three nights in Shimla, so you unpack once and take two separate day trips: one uphill to Kufri, one downhill to Solan. The vehicle is a chauffeur-driven car or Tempo Traveller for the whole trip. From Delhi the route follows NH44 to Zirakpur and NH5 through Kalka, Dharampur and Solan, about 350 km and 7 to 8 hours, which means you pass Solan on Day 1 and come back to it properly on Day 3. See our Solang Valley trip from Manali for a snow-focused itinerary.

Shimla, at about 2,200 m, is the base: The Ridge, Mall Road, Christ Church, Jakhu Temple and the Viceregal Lodge are all within the town. Kufri, 16 km on, is about 2,700 m and offers pony rides to Mahasu Peak, the Himalayan Nature Park and Kufri fun park. Solan lies 45 km below Shimla at roughly 1,600 m, so it is warmer, and it makes a different kind of day: the Mohan Meakin Solan brewery, one of the oldest in the country, the Mohan Shakti Heritage Park with its temple complex, and the Kalka-Shimla toy train, which you can board at Solan for a short section of the line.

December to February is the window for snow at Kufri; March to June is pleasant across all three places; October and November have the clearest skies. In July and August the Solan stretch of NH5 sees rain-related delays, so the Day 3 outing is best kept flexible. This plan suits travellers who want Shimla's classic sights plus a slower, lower-altitude day without changing hotels.

Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Delhi - Shimla

Early morning departure from Delhi with a breakfast halt near Karnal. After Zirakpur the road climbs from Kalka past Barog and Solan, and you should reach Shimla in the early afternoon. Check in, then walk The Ridge and Mall Road; Christ Church and the Town Hall stand on The Ridge, and Lakkar Bazaar's wooden-craft shops are a few minutes further on. Night in Shimla.

Day 2: Shimla - Kufri - Shimla

Start by 9 am for the 45-minute drive to Kufri. Take a pony or walk up to Mahasu Peak for the view across to the Pir Panjal range, then the Himalayan Nature Park and Kufri fun park. Come back via the Green Valley viewpoint. In Shimla after lunch, drive up to Jakhu Temple, then to the Viceregal Lodge (Indian Institute of Advanced Study) for the guided tour of the building. Night in Shimla.

Day 3: Shimla - Solan valley - Shimla

A downhill drive of about 1.5 hours brings you to Solan. Visit the Mohan Shakti Heritage Park at Hart village, a few kilometres before the town, and see the old Solan brewery buildings from the road. If you want the toy train, the driver can drop you at Solan station for a ride of 20 to 40 minutes to Barog or Kandaghat through the tunnels and collect you at the other end. The Shoolini Mata Temple in the town is an optional stop. Back in Shimla by early evening for free time on Mall Road. Night in Shimla.

Day 4: Shimla to New Delhi

Check out after breakfast and leave by 9 am. Lunch on the highway near Ambala, and arrival in Delhi by evening. The tour ends on drop.
