Dalhousie Khajjiar Tour

  • DURATION 04 Nights 05 Days
  • TYPE OF TRIP ROAD TRIP
  • START CITY Delhi
  • DESTINATION CITY Dalhousie - Khajjiar

Dalhousie is a small colonial-era hill town at about 1,970 m in the Chamba district, and Khajjiar is the grass meadow with a pond at its centre, about 22 km further on at roughly 1,900 m. This 04 nights and 05 days package keeps Dalhousie as the only base, so there is no packing and unpacking between hotels. The road from Delhi runs through Ambala, Jalandhar and Pathankot before the climb from Banikhet, a drive of about 12 hours.

The town is compact and quiet. Its five hills are joined by walking paths, and much of the sightseeing is done on foot around Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk, with the car used for the outings to Khajjiar, Dainkund, Kalatop and Chamera lake. Compared with Manali or Shimla the traffic is light, which is one reason families and older travellers choose it.

Spring and early summer, March to June, are the most reliable months, with the meadow green and the Dhauladhar range clear in the morning. October and November are also good, cooler and dry. Snow usually arrives in late December and January and can close the Khajjiar road for short spells. July and August bring heavy rain and slippery roads, so this itinerary is better avoided then.

Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Delhi-Dalhousie

Delhi to Dalhousie. The vehicle leaves Delhi early and covers the flat stretch to Pathankot by early afternoon, with a lunch halt near Jalandhar. The last 80 km climb through Banikhet, and the whole journey takes about 12 hours. Check in on arrival and rest; the evening is free for a first walk to Gandhi Chowk.

Day 2: Dalhousie Sightseeing

Dalhousie local sightseeing. Start with Panchpula, a picnic spot below the town where a stream is bridged in five places and a small memorial stands to the freedom fighter Ajit Singh. Continue to Subhash Baoli, the spring and viewpoint linked with Subhash Chandra Bose, then St John's Church near Gandhi Chowk. After lunch the car takes the road towards Lakkar Mandi, from where the walk up to Dainkund peak gives the widest views on the trip; the Pholani Devi temple stands at the top. Overnight in Dalhousie.

Day 3: Dalhousie Sightseeing with Khajjiar

Khajjiar day. About an hour's drive brings you to the Khajjiar meadow, a wide saucer of grass ringed by deodar with a small lake and the Khajji Nag temple on its edge. Zorbing and pony rides operate here in season and are paid on the spot. On the return, stop at Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, where a forest road and short trails lead through dense cedar; the rest house at the top makes a good turning point. Back in Dalhousie by evening.

Day 4: Dalhousie Gandhi Chowk

Chamera lake and Dalhousie at leisure. The morning is for the drive down to Chamera lake, the reservoir behind the Chamera dam on the Ravi, about 25 km away, where boating is available. The afternoon and evening are free around Gandhi Chowk and the Mall: Tibetan handicraft stalls, the rock paintings near the market, and a walk along Garam Sadak or Thandi Sadak depending on the weather. Overnight in Dalhousie.

Day 5: Dalhousie-New Delhi

Dalhousie to Delhi. Check out after breakfast and drive down through Banikhet to Pathankot, then across Punjab on the highway. With a lunch break near Jalandhar or Ludhiana, the vehicle reaches Delhi about 12 hours later, in the evening.
