This Shimla Kasauli tour is a 3 nights and 4 days road trip from Delhi in a chauffeur-driven car or Tempo Traveller: two nights in Shimla, a day trip to Kufri, and the third night in Kasauli on the way home. It is a loop rather than an out-and-back, so the drive on Day 4 is shorter than the drive on Day 1. Outbound, the road runs on NH44 from Delhi to Zirakpur and then on NH5 through Kalka and Solan to Shimla, about 350 km in 7 to 8 hours. See our Kasauli trip from Chandigarh for a quiet hill stay an hour from the airport. The classic Shimla Manali tour combines both hill stations in six days.
Shimla at about 2,200 m gives you The Ridge, Mall Road, Christ Church, Jakhu Temple and the Viceregal Lodge; Kufri at about 2,700 m adds pony rides to Mahasu Peak, the Himalayan Nature Park and the fun park. Kasauli, at about 1,900 m, is a cantonment town and much quieter. The things to do there are the walk to Monkey Point, the 1850s Christ Church, the Gilbert Trail along the hillside and the Heritage Market. Shimla to Kasauli is about 75 km via Solan and Dharampur and takes 2 to 2.5 hours; Kasauli to Delhi is about 300 km, 6 to 7 hours.
For snow at Kufri, travel between December and February; Kasauli rarely gets snow but is cold and clear then. March to June is comfortable in all three places, October and November are the clearest, and July to August need a weather check because of monsoon landslides on the Solan section. This itinerary suits couples and families who want a busy hill-station stay followed by a quiet last night.
Leave Delhi early, with a breakfast halt on NH44 near Karnal, and climb from Kalka. Reach Shimla by early afternoon and check in. Spend the evening on The Ridge, at Christ Church and along Mall Road; the driver drops you at the lift parking since vehicles are not allowed on Mall Road. Overnight in Shimla.
Drive to Kufri, 16 km and about 45 minutes. Pony ride or walk to Mahasu Peak, then the Himalayan Nature Park and Kufri fun park for go-karting. Return to Shimla for lunch, followed by Jakhu Temple with the 108-foot Hanuman statue, the Viceregal Lodge, and a stop at Scandal Point. Evening free. Overnight in Shimla.
Check out and drive down NH5 through Solan and Dharampur, about 2 to 2.5 hours, to check in at Kasauli by lunchtime. In the afternoon walk to Monkey Point inside the Air Force station (carry photo ID; cameras and phones are not allowed inside), then Christ Church and the Heritage Market on Kasauli's Mall Road. Sunset Point is a ten-minute walk from the market. Overnight in Kasauli.
Early walkers can take the Gilbert Trail before breakfast, a level path of about 1.5 km with views down to the plains. Leave by 10 am; the road drops to Dharampur and Kalka, then Zirakpur and NH44. Lunch near Ambala and Delhi by evening. The tour ends on drop.
