The Chandigarh Kasauli tour is a 3 nights and 4 days road trip from Delhi that pairs a planned city with a small cantonment hill town. Two nights are in Chandigarh and one in Kasauli, all in a chauffeur-driven car or Tempo Traveller from Delhi. The Delhi to Chandigarh leg is about 250 km on NH44 through Panipat, Karnal and Ambala and takes 4 to 5 hours; it is the easiest of the Himachal-bound drives, and there is no hill road at all until Day 3.
Chandigarh's main sights sit close together: Sukhna Lake, the Rock Garden and the Zakir Hussain Rose Garden are within a few kilometres of one another in the northern sectors, and Sector 17 is the walking market. From Chandigarh, Kasauli is about 60 km and around 2 hours: NH5 to Kalka and Dharampur, then the side road climbing to the town at about 1,900 m. Kasauli has no large attractions; you go for the Monkey Point walk, the 1850s Christ Church, the Gilbert Trail, the Heritage Market and clean air, and Pinjore Gardens can be added on the way up.
Kasauli is a year-round destination. March to June is warm on the plains and pleasant in the hills; October to February is clear and cold, with frost but rarely snow; July and August bring rain and mist. The return from Kasauli to Delhi is about 300 km, 6 to 7 hours. This plan suits first-time visitors to the region, families with young children, and anyone who wants a hill break without an all-day mountain drive.
Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Delhi - Chandigarh
Depart Delhi early to avoid traffic at the border, with a halt near Karnal. Arrive in Chandigarh by early afternoon and check in. The evening is for the Sector 17 plaza and its market, or the Elante area if you prefer a mall. Overnight in Chandigarh.
Day 2: : Chandigarh Sightseeing Tour
Morning at Sukhna Lake for the promenade and boating, then the Rock Garden next door, built by Nek Chand from industrial and household waste. After lunch, the Rose Garden in Sector 16 and, if you wish, the Capitol Complex for the Open Hand monument, which is seen on the fixed-time guided tour run from the tourist office. An evening stop at Shanti Kunj park is optional. Overnight in Chandigarh.
Day 3: Chandigarh - kasauli
Leave by 9 am and stop at Pinjore (Yadavindra) Gardens, about 20 km out, for an hour. Continue via Kalka and Dharampur up to Kasauli, arriving around lunchtime. In the afternoon walk to Monkey Point inside the Air Force station (photo ID needed, no cameras or phones), then Christ Church and the Heritage Market. Sunset Point is a short walk from the market. Overnight in Kasauli.
Day 4: Kasauli to New Delhi
Walk the Gilbert Trail before breakfast if you like, then check out by 10 am. Descend to Kalka, join NH44 at Zirakpur, and take lunch near Ambala. Reach Delhi by evening; the tour ends on drop.
Route notes for Delhi to Chandigarh and Kasauli
- Delhi to Chandigarh about 250 km on NH44 (4 to 5 hours); Chandigarh to Kasauli about 60 km via NH5 (about 2 hours); Kasauli to Delhi about 300 km (6 to 7 hours).
- Breakfast and lunch halts are on NH44 near Karnal and Ambala; the driver stops at a restaurant of your choice on request.
- The market section of Kasauli's Mall Road is closed to vehicles; the driver drops at the bus stand parking or your hotel. Parking in Chandigarh's sector markets is paid and is covered.
- Monkey Point is on Air Force land: ID required, no cameras or phones, and it closes in the late afternoon.
- Covered by the package: chauffeur-driven AC vehicle from Delhi, driver's charges, fuel, tolls, state tax and parking. Paid separately: hotels, meals, and tickets for the Rock Garden, Rose Garden, Pinjore Gardens and boating.
