This 2 nights and 3 days Shimla Kufri tour runs from Delhi in a chauffeur-driven car or Tempo Traveller, with both nights in Shimla and a day out to Kufri. The road leaves Delhi on NH44, passes Panipat, Karnal and Ambala, turns off at Zirakpur near Chandigarh and climbs NH5 through Kalka, Dharampur and Solan to Shimla. Allow 7 to 8 hours for the roughly 350 km, including a meal halt on the plains and a tea stop on the hill section.
Shimla sits at about 2,200 m and is walked rather than driven: The Ridge, Mall Road, Christ Church and Scandal Point are within a few hundred metres of each other, and Jakhu Temple is a short climb or ropeway ride above them. Kufri, 16 km further along the Hindustan-Tibet road, is higher at about 2,700 m and noticeably colder. It is the place on this route for pony rides to Mahasu Peak, the Himalayan Nature Park and the go-karting and rides at Kufri fun park.
For snow, book between December and February, when Kufri usually has cover even if Shimla town does not. March to June is the busy family season with clear days and cool evenings. July and August bring rain and occasional landslides on NH5, so keep some buffer in the return timing. October and November give the clearest mountain views of the year and quieter roads. The short duration suits a weekend, and the same vehicle takes you from Delhi and back with no changes on the way.
Leave Delhi by 6 am to clear the city before traffic builds. Breakfast halt near Karnal or Ambala, then the climb begins at Kalka after Zirakpur. You should be in Shimla by mid-afternoon; the vehicle drops you at the hotel or the Cart Road lift parking, because Mall Road is closed to private vehicles. The evening is free on The Ridge and Mall Road, with Christ Church and the Gaiety Theatre a few steps away. Overnight in Shimla.
A morning drive of about 45 minutes takes you to Kufri. Hire a pony at the car park for the ride up Mahasu Peak, or walk it in about an hour; the Himalayan Nature Park with its pheasants and Himalayan black bear is on the same road, and Kufri fun park has go-karting and a small adventure area. If the sky is clear, continue 6 km to Fagu for the apple orchards. Return to Shimla after lunch for Jakhu Temple with its 108-foot Hanuman statue at 2,455 m, reached by road or by the ropeway from near The Ridge. If time allows, finish at the Viceregal Lodge (Indian Institute of Advanced Study) grounds. Overnight in Shimla.
Check out after breakfast and start the descent by 9 am. An optional stop at Barog station on the Kalka-Shimla railway or the Solan viewpoint breaks the hill section. Lunch halt around Ambala, then NH44 into Delhi by evening. The tour ends on drop at your address.
