Dharamshala Bir Billing Palampur Tour

  • DURATION 04 Nights 05 Days
  • TYPE OF TRIP ROAD TRIP
  • START CITY Delhi
  • DESTINATION CITY Dharamshala - Bir - Billing - Palampur

This is a Kangra valley circuit rather than a stay in one hill station. Over 04 nights and 05 days it covers Dharamshala and McLeod Ganj at 1,500 to 1,800 m, the paragliding village of Bir at about 1,500 m with its take-off site at Billing roughly 900 m higher on the ridge, and the tea-growing town of Palampur at about 1,200 m. All three lie within two hours of each other along the base of the Dhauladhar range, so the daily driving is short.

The road from Delhi takes 10 to 11 hours via Ambala, Jalandhar and Pathankot. From Dharamshala, Bir is about 2 hours east on the Palampur road and Palampur itself about 1.5 hours. The return from Palampur to Delhi is similar in length to the outward drive.

The dates that matter here are the flying seasons at Bir Billing: October to November and March to June, when tandem flights run daily in stable conditions. Flying is suspended in the July and August monsoon and is patchy in the depth of winter. If a flight is the main reason for the trip, book for those months and keep the morning free, since pilots wait for the right wind. Palampur is pleasant in any dry month, with tea plucked from April to October and the Baijnath Shiva temple open all year.

Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Delhi to Dharamshala

Delhi to Dharamshala. The vehicle starts early and covers Haryana and Punjab on the highway, with a lunch stop before Pathankot. The last hour climbs from Kangra into Dharamshala, about 10 to 11 hours after leaving Delhi. Check in and spend the evening in McLeod Ganj at your own pace.

Day 2: Dharamshala Sightseeing

Dharamshala sightseeing. The Tsuglagkhang complex comes first, with the Dalai Lama's temple, the Namgyal monastery and the Tibet Museum in one compound. Bhagsu Nag temple and the Bhagsu waterfall follow, then a drive down to the HPCA cricket stadium in lower Dharamshala and St John in the Wilderness church on the way back. Late afternoon is free for the Tibetan shops and cafes on Temple Road. Overnight in Dharamshala.

Day 3: Dharamshala to Bir-Billing

Dharamshala to Bir Billing. A 2-hour drive east through Palampur brings you to Bir, the landing site for the Billing paragliders and home to a cluster of Tibetan monasteries at Chowgan. Walk the landing field first, where gliders come in through the afternoon and the tea stalls fill up before sunset.

The tandem flight itself starts at Billing, 14 km further up a hairpin road at about 2,400 m. Flights are booked with the licensed operators at Bir and paid directly; the vehicle takes you to the take-off and you glide back down to the landing field in 15 to 30 minutes depending on conditions. Flights run in the October to November and March to June seasons and are called off in rain or strong wind. Non-flyers can walk to Gunehar waterfall or visit the monasteries at Chowgan while they wait. Drive back to Dharamshala for the night.

Day 4: Dharamshala to Palampur

Dharamshala to Palampur. A 1.5-hour drive brings you to Palampur, the centre of the Kangra tea belt. The morning goes to the tea gardens and a factory visit, and to Baijnath, 16 km on, where the 13th-century stone Shiva temple stands above the Binwa river. Neugal Khad, a stream bed with a cafe and a wide view of the Dhauladhar, and the Andretta artists' village with its pottery are the other stops. If the Day 3 flight was cancelled by weather, Bir is only 30 km from Palampur and a second attempt can be fitted in here. Overnight in Palampur.

Day 5: Palampur to New Delhi

Palampur to Delhi. Leave after breakfast and join the highway at Pathankot via Kangra. With one lunch stop in Punjab, the vehicle reaches Delhi in the evening, around 10 to 11 hours after departure, and the tour ends at your drop point.

Route notes for Dharamshala, Bir Billing and Palampur

  • Delhi to Dharamshala is about 480 km (10 to 11 hours); Dharamshala to Bir about 70 km (2 hours); Dharamshala to Palampur about 40 km (1.5 hours); Palampur to Delhi about 470 km (10 to 11 hours).
  • Lunch on the long days is at a highway restaurant near Jalandhar; on the Bir day the landing-site cafes and the Palampur bazaar cover meals.
  • The Bir to Billing road is narrow and the vehicle may drop you at the operators' pick-up point rather than the take-off itself; tandem flights carry weight limits of roughly 20 to 90 kg and are weather dependent.
  • No permits are required; the Bir landing site and Baijnath temple have paid car parks, and the tea factory visit is free or nominal.
  • Included: chauffeur-driven AC vehicle from Delhi, driver's charges, fuel, tolls, parking and state taxes. Not included: hotels unless quoted, meals, entry tickets and paragliding fees.
  • Suits travellers who want one adventure activity inside a relaxed five-day valley itinerary, including couples and small friend groups.
