Millions of people pass through it every year- Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mussoorie, Nainital- yet most never discover the real thing. The real Uttarakhand is the deodar-scented valley where 125 temples built over a thousand years ago stand quietly in the mist. It’s the alpine meadow at dawn where the five-peaked Panchachuli turns pink before any colour enters the sky. It’s the border town at the edge of everything, where the river marks where India ends.

This two-week circuit travels through both Garhwal and Kumaon- the two souls of Uttarakhand- connecting a chain of places that remain genuinely offbeat- also known as Uttarakhand hidden gems, even as India’s tourist machine churns around them. From Haridwar we curve through the cool quiet of Kanatal and Dhanaulti, dip south to the drowned history of Tehri, then cross into Kumaon to explore the ancient wonder of Jageshwar, the sacred confluence at Bageshwar, the trekker’s paradise of Munsyari, the frontier town of Dharchula, and finally the cultural capital of Almora. This is a road trip for the curious- those who prefer a conversation with a local priest over a crowded temple rush, and a sunrise from an empty ridgeline over any rooftop restaurant. To make this trip more interesting, do not forget to hire Tempo Traveller on Rent in Delhi.

The Nine Stops

Every Hidden Gem on This Route- In Detail

What makes each place unique, what to do there, and what to eat. Most visitors arrive, attend the evening Ganga Aarti at Har Ki Pauri, and leave- treating it as a transit stop. But Haridwar rewards those who stay a day longer and wander beyond the main ghat. The narrow lanes of the old city are alive with a 4,000-year-old commerce of devotion: marigold sellers, sweet shops selling Haridwar’s famous prasad, itinerant priests, pilgrims with sacred Ganga jal in copper vessels, and the constant smell of incense and river mud. The Ganga here is cold, powerful, and alive in a way that is hard to describe. Bathe at Har Ki Pauri at dawn before the crowds arrive- just you, a handful of devoted bathers, and the river.

Seek out Mansa Devi Temple via the ropeway for views over the city and the Ganga bending through the Himalayan foothills. Visit Chandi Devi Temple. Explore Daksh Mahadev Temple and Shanti Kunj Ashram for a deeper flavour of Haridwar beyond the tourist trail. The evening aarti at Har Ki Pauri, though crowded, remains one of the most moving ceremonies in India- hundreds of diyas released on the current, the entire ghat lit in a warm gold, temple bells cascading over the roar of the river.

DAY 3: Mussoorie

“The Queen of the Hills- best at dawn, before the day-trippers arrive”

Mussoorie has been “discovered” for 200 years and knows it. Yet despite being one of India’s most visited hill stations, it retains pockets of genuine charm that most visitors walk right past. The key is timing: arrive in the evening, stay overnight, and experience the town before the day crowd arrives. Walk the Camel’s Back Road at 6 AM when it’s just locals and morning walkers, with views of snow peaks in the distance and cloud wisps in the valley below. The Landour area- above the main town, quieter and older — is where writers, artists, and long-stay visitors have always retreated. Landour Bakehouse, Char Dukan, and the old Victorian-era clock tower on Landour ridge are worth the extra 20-minute drive uphill.

Mussoorie here functions as a beautiful one-night pause between Haridwar’s intensity and the deeper quiet of Kanatal. Use it well: do the Mall Road walk once, have a meal, sleep, and move on early the next morning toward the real hidden Uttarakhand waiting ahead.

Suggested Read: Top 10 Trending Places of Uttarakhand This Year

Days 4-5: Kanatal

“The pine-and-apple secret between Mussoorie and Chamba”

Kanatal is where this trip pivots from the familiar to the extraordinary. Perched at 8,500 feet in Tehri Garhwal district, approximately 78 km from Dehradun, this small village is surrounded by dense forests of pine and deodar, apple orchards fragrant in spring, and valley views that stretch for miles. Unlike Mussoorie’s Mall Road or Nainital’s lakeside, Kanatal has no centre to speak of — no touristy bazaar, no traffic jam, no drone of buses. It is primarily resorts, campsites, homestays, and forest trails. This makes it precisely what it is: a place to slow down and breathe. Sit on your resort deck and watch the clouds move through the valley. Light a bonfire at night. Wake up at 5 AM for a silent walk on the ridge with unbroken views of the Garhwal Himalayas.

Trek to Surkanda Devi Temple (one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, at 3,030 m), which involves a moderate 2 km climb through rhododendron forest to magnificent panoramic views. Drive to Kodia Forest for a peaceful 6 km level walk through dense woodland that opens into rolling hills and hidden natural springs. Kanatal also serves as the base for day trips to Tehri Dam and the beginning of the Chamba valley.

DAY 6: Dhanaulti

“Dense deodar cathedral — 15 km from Kanatal, a world away from noise”

Dhanaulti is Kanatal’s slightly more developed neighbour- still quiet, still forested, but with a few more facilities. Famous for its twin Eco Parks (Amber and Dhara), maintained by the Uttarakhand Forest Department, which are essentially cathedral-like groves of ancient deodar and cedar where the air smells unlike anything in the plains. Walking paths wind through the trees; in winter, these parks receive light snowfall, making them popular with families from Delhi and Dehradun. In spring, the rhododendron and oak bloom fills them with colour. The parks also have adventure activities for the more active visitor: Burma Bridge, Flying Fox, commando nets.

The Devi Darshan Triangle is Dhanaulti’s spiritual anchor: three temples- Surkanda Devi, Chandrabadni, and Kunjapuri- form a sacred triangle that devotees visit on auspicious days. Kunjapuri Temple, perched at 1,676 m above Narendra Nagar, is famous for its extraordinary sunrise view over the Garhwal peaks. Visit it at dawn for one of the finest sunrise moments in the Garhwal hills. On this itinerary, Dhanaulti works perfectly as an afternoon stop on Day 5 before overnight stay, before moving on toward Tehri the next morning.

DAY 7: New Tehri & Tehri Lake

“An entire city drowned beneath a lake- history, water, and melancholy”

Tehri is unlike any other place on this itinerary- or perhaps in all of India. When the Tehri Dam, Asia’s tallest dam at 261 metres, was completed in 2006, the old town of Tehri- a 3,500-year-old settlement at the confluence of the Bhagirathi and Bhilangana rivers was submerged beneath the rising reservoir. An ancient market town, temples, homes, the memories of generations: all now lie somewhere under the 42 km² reservoir known as Tehri Lake. On calm days, locals say you can see the outline of the old town’s structures through the turquoise water. Stand on the dam and look across the vast lake, ringed by Himalayan ridges, and feel the strange weight of what lies beneath.

New Tehri, built on the hills above, is a modern planned town that overlooks this vast reservoir. Tehri Lake now hosts some of north India’s most dramatic water sports: jet skiing, kayaking, parasailing, banana boat rides, and overnight houseboats with mountain views. For those who want adventure on the water surrounded by Himalayan scenery, Tehri is entirely unique. Take a boat ride out to the middle of the lake at sunset to fully grasp its scale and melancholic beauty.

Find This: How to plan a trip to Uttarakhand in Winter?

DAYS 8-9: Jageshwar

“125 temples in a deodar forest — India’s open-air ancient Shiva museum”

Jageshwar is one of the most extraordinary places in all of India and one of the least visited, given what it contains. At 37 km northeast of Almora in the Jataganga river valley, this UNESCO-proposed heritage site holds a complex of over 125 ancient Shiva temples, built between the 7th and 14th centuries by successive dynasties under the Katyuri rulers. The temples are made of stone, blackened with age, carved in multiple architectural styles- the Nagara, Rekha-prasada, Valabhi Shikhara, Pidha-deval- and arranged along the banks of the gurgling Jata Ganga stream beneath a canopy of towering deodar trees. The entire place has the feeling of a secret that time forgot.

The Maha Mrityunjaya Temple, considered the oldest shrine in the complex, is where devotees chant the sacred mantra for protection and healing. The main Jageshwar Temple houses the Shivlinga believed to be a form of the Nagesh Jyotirlinga- making this one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Adi Shankaracharya is said to have visited and revived these temples during his 8th-century spiritual journey across India. Attend the evening aarti inside the temple complex, when oil lamps are lit beneath the deodar trees and temple bells begin to ring in the darkening forest- it is one of the most haunting and beautiful moments available to a traveller in Uttarakhand.

DAY 9: Bageshwar

“The Varanasi of the Himalayas — where the Gomati meets the Saryu”

Bageshwar sits at the sacred confluence of the Gomati and Saryu rivers at the base of the Bageshwar Danda ridge — a town so ancient it appears in Hindu texts as a significant pilgrimage destination connected to Lord Shiva. The Bagnath Temple at the heart of town, dedicated to Lord Shiva as the Lord of Tigers, is an exquisitely carved stone temple dating to the early medieval period, surrounded by a sacred courtyard and the sounds of pilgrims bathing in the ice-cold river waters. Every January, the famous Uttarayani Mela (one of Uttarakhand’s largest fairs) transforms the town with colour, folk music, and traders from across Kumaon and Garhwal. The town is also the gateway to Pindari Glacier trek — one of Uttarakhand’s most celebrated treks, accessible via Khati village.

The town itself is intimate, unhurried, and genuinely devotional. Sit by the river in the late afternoon and watch the ritual washing of clothes, the children swimming, the priests performing small ceremonies. The surrounding valley — Saryu River valley — is one of the most beautiful in Kumaon: terraced fields, oak and rhododendron forest, and in the distance the white Himalayan ridgeline. Bageshwar deserves an afternoon and evening, and rewards unhurried exploration.

Suggested Read: Places to visit in Uttarakhand in Monsoon

DAY 10-12: Munsyari

“The ‘Little Kashmir’ where five Himalayan peaks greet you at breakfast”

Munsyari is the emotional high point of this entire journey and for many travellers who make it here, the most beautiful place they’ve ever been. Perched at 2,298 metres in Pithoragarh district at the head of the Johar Valley, this small alpine town commands an unobstructed view of the five-peaked Panchachuli massif (6,904 m), whose snow and ice glow at sunrise in colours from rose to deep gold. The name means “a place of snow” in the local Johari dialect, and it earns that name: the surrounding peaks, glaciers, and meadows are deeply Himalayan in character, yet the town itself retains an authentic village quality- small shops, homestays run by mountain families, and trails leading off in every direction into genuine wilderness.

Munsyari is the base for some of Uttarakhand’s finest treks: Khaliya Top (3,500 m) for the most spectacular Panchachuli panorama; Milam Glacier trek (one of the longest glacier treks in India); Namik and Ralam Glacier treks. The Birthi Falls, 35 km before town on the approach road, is among the most beautiful waterfalls in the hills. Darkot Village, a short walk from town, is a traditional Johari tribal settlement where you can stay in homestays, learn about local weaving traditions, and eat the most authentic Kumaoni food of the entire trip. The Tribal Heritage Museum in Munsyari preserves the extraordinary textile, ornamental, and cultural heritage of the Johar Valley people.

Day 12: Dharchula

“The edge of India — Kali River, Nepal across the water, mountains on every side”

Dharchula is one of those places that feels like the end of the world in the best possible way. This small border town on the banks of the Kali River sits precisely where India meets Nepal — the river here forms the international border, and across the water lies the Nepali town of Darchula. Ringed by towering Himalayan peaks and forested ridges, Dharchula is first and foremost a transit point on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra route and the Adi Kailash and Om Parvat yatras — which means it has a charged, purposeful energy. Pilgrims preparing for some of the most arduous and sacred journeys in Hinduism pass through here, and the town has absorbed something of that devotional gravity.

The Panchachuli peaks, visible from Munsyari to the south, present an entirely different face when seen from Dharchula — closer, more dramatic, almost overwhelming. The riverside walk along the Kali is quiet and beautiful, with the roar of the glacial river filling the air. Across the border in Nepal, small settlements are visible. This proximity to another country at the edge of the Himalayas creates a feeling unlike anywhere else in India. The Kumaoni and Shauna tribal communities of this area have their own distinct cultural traditions worth exploring.

DAYS 13-14: Almora

“The Oxford of the Hills- Kumaon’s art, culture, food, and soul”

Almora is where this journey ends — and fittingly, because Almora is the cultural heartbeat of Kumaon. This crescent-shaped hilltop town, spread over a horseshoe ridge with sweeping views of the Himalayan range, has been an intellectual and artistic centre for centuries: Swami Vivekananda meditated here, Rabindranath Tagore visited, the poet Sumitranandan Pant was born in the nearby village of Kaushani, and Almora’s Kasar Devi ridge was visited by Carl Sagan, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, and D.H. Lawrence, drawn by an unusual electromagnetic anomaly that yogi traditions associated with extraordinary meditation power. The town’s bazaar — a narrow, cobblestone lane of old Kumaoni architecture — is one of the finest old-market streets in the Himalayan hills. Shop for Almora’s world-famous bal mithai (a brown fudge made from khoya, rolled in white sugar pearls), singori, and woolens.

Find Here: How to explore Kumaon for a deep dive in nature’s beauty?

Kasar Devi Temple on the ridge above town is the spiritual summit of Almora- a small ancient temple with extraordinary 270° mountain panoramas. Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary, 30 km away, offers perhaps the finest Himalayan panorama in Kumaon: 300 km of continuous snow peak views including Nanda Devi (7,816 m), Kedarnath, Trishul, and Shivling. Almora’s Chitai Golu Devta Temple, where thousands of petitions to the local deity are posted on bells, is a unique and moving example of living folk Hinduism.

What to Pack

The Essential Packing List

This circuit crosses altitudes from 960 m (Dharchula) to 3,500 m (Khaliya Top).
